Dr. Charles in the Making

Maturity through adversity and self-reflection has contributed to Antoinette’s aspiration to be a physician. She is a third-year medical student at Duke University School of Medicine pursuing a surgical career with interests in medical journalism, health policy, and global health. Additionally, she is a MPH student at UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy. Antoinette promises to be open and transparent on her journey to becoming Dr. Charles.

Health and Social Equity Advocate

As a future physician and public health scholar, Antoinette hopes to use gained expertise to advocate for patients’ rights and mitigate social injustices in medicine. She has spearheaded several initiatives related to health equity. She co-hosts Let’s Talk Reform, a podcast that elevates the discussion around social and health needs needs in the school-to-prison pipeline. Antoinette co-founded the Future Leaders in Neurosurgery Symposium, a virtual event for high school and undergraduate students to provide exposure to the field of neurosurgery. In May 2022, Antoinette was invited to serve on the White House Clinician Innovators Roundtable Series to contribute to discussions on health policy and civic engagement that directly impact providers and patients.

Antoinette values having a well-balanced life. She appreciates every opportunity to gain exposure to different customs, foods, and lifestyles through travel. Not to mention, she loves visiting museums and monuments, exploring nature, brunching with friends, and riding scooters downtown. Antoinette is excited to provide insight into her personal life by highlighting local, national, and international adventures. Antoinette will keep you updated on her sporadic escapades.
